The Sierra Club is proud to honor Thomas Abinanti with an endorsement of his candidacy for Westchester County Legislator, District # 12.

Today, Sierra Club leaders from the Lower Hudson Group announced the Club’s endorsement of Thomas Abinanti who is in an uncontested race for Westchester County Legislator, District #12.

Thomas Abinanti is a true leader for environmental initiatives which promote clean air and water and better health for Westchester citizens.  He has served on the Board of Legislators since 1991.  As Chair of the Board of Legislators’ Committee on the Environment, he has tirelessly promoted measures to protect Westchester from air and water pollution and destructive land use policies.  He created a Healthy Air Task Force to reduce local pollution through advocacy and led the WCL to pass legislation which reduces emissions of carbon and other pollutants.  Mr. Abinanti co-sponsored the Clean Indoor Act prohibiting smoking in all workplaces.  He has been an outspoken leader to close Indian Point and drafted the first resolution declaring the evacuation plan to be ineffective.  Mr. Abinanti lobbied and voted for County participation in purchasing numerous open spaces throughout Westchester and to reduce the negative impacts of urban sprawl.  He has also sponsored legislation which provides greater protection for watershed areas in Westchester and New York City.

According to Mr. Abinanti, “Preserving the environment is my first priority.”  Sierra Club leaders urge Southern Westchester residents who care about reducing pollution, overdevelopment, and the effects of harmful greenhouse emissions to re-elect Thomas Abinanti for Westchester County Legislator, District #12.
